Brooklyn Navy Yard to offer paid summer internships to 100 local college studentsThe Brooklyn Navy Yard Corp. is looking to hire about 100 college or college-bound students to work at a variety of posts in the city-owned, 300-acre industrial park on the Brooklyn waterfront. The summer program is an outgrowth of the not-for-profit’s larger goal to create jobs and hire from the surrounding area. For the students who are chosen, it’s a paycheck and a chance to learn about the city’s industrial sector. In addition to the 100 summer hires, the Navy Yard places another 100 students in internships throughout the year. Students selected earn between $9 and $11 an hour. Stipends are paid by the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The types of Navy Yard tenants who hire the students run the gamut from metal workers to film companies to fabricators. Students work a 35-hour week with a one-hour unpaid lunch break each day. There will be two eight-week sessions this summer beginning on June 2 and June 30. The deadline to apply is May 16. Students must be at least 18 years old and be able to present documentation they are currently enrolled in college or have been admitted. When the program is completed, some are ask to stay on.
