MTA’s MetroCard Turns 20…

Metrocard 20th year

Remember when the Metro-card made it’s debut on January 6, 1994 as a blue card and the unlimited MetroCard debuted in 1998. The token was officially phased out in 2004.  What’s next? Later this year, the MTA will issue a request for proposals. The goal is to have a new fare payment system in place by 2019. Maybe it’ll be a touch and go card similar to EZ-Pass or maybe even using your cellphone.  It won’t involve another MetroCard-like device, as the MTA wants to get out of the business of producing fare cards: LINK
