Don’t Throw Those MetroCards Away: MTA Cashing In On MetroCard “Green Fee”

mta-green-surcharge-2The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says its $1 “green fee” on purchases of brand new MetroCards is bringing in more cash than it anticipated. Starting in March 2013, customers have been charged an extra buck when they buy a new card instead of reloading the one they already have. The MTA said they wanted to give an incentive for riders to re-use their old cards and reduce waste, but a lot of people are still paying for new cards. At the end of the day, the MTA has too generate revenue. The MTA said they wanted to raise $20 million through a combination of card sales and savings thanks to the reduced need for MetroCards.
